In the winter of 2018, Legal Aid partnered with Harvard University to offer “Winterships” to Harvard students. The Winternship allowed students to accompany staff for 1-3 days during their winter vacation in January, giving them the opportunity to observe court hearings and ask questions. It provides participants with hands-on experience and educates students about the work the Legal Aid Society does to serve New Yorkers. The majority of second-year summer interns work in one of our process departments. These departments include, in order of number of assignments per year, our tort, labour and employment law, special federal jurisdiction, family courts, administrative and regulatory litigation, general litigation, commercial and real estate disputes, and workers` compensation. On occasion, we have placed an individual in our positive litigation, appeals, environmental law, legal advice, and tax and insolvency litigation departments. In general, we do not place second-year summer interns in our transactions departments, which include our Economic Development, Contracting and Real Estate, and Municipal Finance activities. First-year summer articling students may be placed in one of the 16 legal departments of the Legal Department. For more information on the work of the trainees, please refer to the descriptions of the various legal departments of the legal department. We also offer an articling investigator program, which provides students interested in pursuing a legal career with exciting hands-on experience in criminal defense law. The legal department selects approximately 50 summer specialization program articling students from more than 2,500 applications submitted each year. The legal department is perhaps the only public/public sector employer in the country to offer permanent employment to its second-year summer articling students based on their summer performance.
