Even through my computer screen this summer, I felt like I was joining an incredible legacy of lawyers committed to changing people`s lives. Through this unique online experience, I was able to contribute to legal projects from the Washington D.C. and New York offices and meet with employees from both teams. I worked on issues that my supervisor knew were important to me, whether it was voter rights, public health, educational equity or accessible housing. As a member of the Thurgood Marshall Institute, a division of the DFL, I have been able to produce valuable research with my supervisors and have found it very rewarding to use my data and academic research skills and apply them to serve our clients and their communities. Also, my supervisors really gave me a lot of freedom to track my projects and workload as I saw fit, and that was really encouraging. Inc. (“LDF”) invites prospective law students, law clerks and other law school graduates to apply for LDF`s sponsorship of public interest scholarship projects working in. Young people need the platform, resources and guidance. They have what we need. It is very important to give them this vehicle for change. Hunter said his work with the clinic this semester will familiarize him with some of the topics that will be covered in his rotation. While we ask students to first apply for summer funding from their law school`s public interest programs and other appropriate sources, we encourage interested candidates to apply, whether or not they are able to obtain such funding. In its sole discretion, DFL may provide reasonable funds based on need to those who are unable to raise funds from other sources. While DFL prefers to hire second-year law students, we will review first-year law students on a case-by-case basis. Interns must work at least ten (10) weeks during the summer, but other arrangements may be made on a case-by-case basis. Terrence Hunter`s mission is to help disadvantaged African Americans and their communities. His passion for civil rights was the driving force behind his decision to study law. “Being selected as an articling student at LDF means I have a responsibility to show the DFL and other national companies and organizations that UM law students are just as well trained as Ivy League law students,” he said. Hunter, who earned a bachelor`s degree in English from Tougaloo College before enrolling in law school, is one of 11 students across the country selected for this prestigious internship. His colleagues come from major law schools, including Yale, Harvard, Columbia and New York universities and Yeshiva University`s Cardozo School of Law. “I`ve been working with Terrence since he was 1L and he`s always shown a passion for civil rights,” she said. “His family`s history with the NAACP in Mississippi, coupled with his overall attitude, makes him an ideal addition to the Legal Defense Fund`s work this summer.” Discover scholarships for students and young professionals.
